(Das Boot...

Characteristics of the Greyhound
Greyhounds can make excellent companions for all kinds of people. Even though these dogs are large, many do well with children. They are extremely affectionate with their families and may prefer not to be left alone.
Because they have a high prey drive, greyhounds may not be suitable for families with other pets, including cats. Also because of this prey drive, they should be kept on a leash while going for walks to prevent them from running after wildlife.
These dogs are rarely aggressive and respond well to strangers. Greyhounds are also sensitive, requiring patience and understanding. It's best for these dogs to live in a peaceful household and be spoken to with kindness.

History of the Greyhound
Archaeological evidence of greyhound-like dogs dates back 8,000 years to the Middle East, making it one of the most ancient dog breeds. Much preferred by the ancient Egyptians, greyhounds were likely also owned by Romans and Greeks. By the ninth century, the breed could be found throughout Europe, and Spanish explorers brought them to the Americas in the 1500s.
Greyhounds were classically used for their hunting prowess and coursing. They were admired by everyone from kings to artists for their inverted S shape. In addition, the greyhound is the first breed of dog mentioned in English literature over the centuries, and was specifically mentioned in many of William Shakespeare's plays. Greyhounds also held a place in the hearts of English nobility, including King James 1 and Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, who owned a famous greyhound named Eos that happily appeared in many court portraits.
The modern greyhound derives from dogs bred in England during the 18th and 19th centuries. The breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1885. Shortly after, modern greyhound racing started in the 1920s in both the United States and England.
The greyhound is typically not used for hunting in more modern times, and live game coursing and racing greyhounds are now illegal in many places. Even England's once-revered Waterloo Cup coursing meet is no longer in existence, thanks to the Hunting Act of 2004 deeming it an act of cruelty.
The breed has experienced a surge in popularity in the U.S. since racing the dogs has stopped in many states and rescue organizations have begun to place retired racing greyhounds for adoption.

Greyhound Care
Greyhounds need slightly different care than other types of large dogs. You'll have to honor their need for short stints of exercise rather than long hauls. Maintaining their coat is never a problem since it's short and smooth. Training will be your biggest challenge since this breed has a highly sensitive nature and will need help adapting to their new environment.
Exercise
Contrary to popular belief, greyhounds are not usually hyperactive or overly energetic. Though excellent athletes, they can also be couch potatoes most of the day, and do very well living in apartments. They love to run and sprint, but a moderate amount of daily exercise, about an hour a day including a 30-minute walk, should be enough to keep a greyhound motivated and fit.
Don't allow a greyhound off-leash, however, as they are prey-driven and will bolt away after small animals. It's best to have a fenced-in area where they can run around. When exercising your greyhound, remember that while they can tolerate hot weather, they will get chilled in cold weather because they lack body fat. You may need to provide a sweater for your pup in the winter while going on a walk.
Grooming
The greyhound's short, smooth coat needs little grooming. The breed sheds at a low to moderate rate, so an occasional once-over with a soft brush or grooming mitt should be sufficient.
The typical greyhound only needs occasional bathing. Trim their nails regularly, keeping them short to prevent slipping on slick floors. Look in their ears at least weekly for wax buildup and irritation. It is also good to pay attention to dental hygiene and brush your dog's teeth two to three times per week.
Training
Both proper training and socialization are very important for greyhounds. Fortunately, most can learn and adjust well. Cats and small pets may provoke their predatory instinct until they learn the other animals are family members.
It helps to know that a rescued racing dog has had a very different life from the average companion dog. When a dog is not racing, they spend a lot of time in kennels and usually never see the inside of a typical home. The dog may be leash-trained but has typically not been exposed to things like stairs and glass doors, so they will need a bit of extra training.

Common Health Problems
Responsible breeders strive to maintain the highest breed standards as established by kennel clubs like the AKC. Dogs bred by these standards are less likely to inherit health conditions. However, some hereditary health problems can occur in the breed.
Greyhounds are generally healthy dogs, but the following are some conditions to be aware of:
Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus: This condition causes the tendency to produce gas and bloat, which can lead to stomach torsion and a medical emergency.
Polyneuropathy: This inherited neurologic disorder causes symptoms that include an abnormal gait, exercise intolerance, ataxia, muscle wasting, and difficulty breathing.
Delayed postoperative bleeding: Greyhounds are susceptible to bleeding roughly 36 to 48 hours after surgery or trauma.
Hip Dysplasia: This inheritable condition leads to lameness and arthritis.
Osteosarcoma: One of the first signs of this aggressive bone cancer is lameness. It can be treated with amputation and chemotherapy.
Hypothyroidism: This thyroid condition can be treated with medication.
Sensitivity to anesthesia: Greyhounds need less anesthesia than other dogs of the same size, and the regular dose can be deadly. They metabolize barbiturates slowly.
Sensitivity to insecticides: Greyhounds are sensitive to pyrethrin-based flea collars and sprays, requiring alternative products.

Diet and Nutrition
Male greyhounds need 2.5 to 4 cups of dry food per day, and females need 1.5 to 3 cups. Divide this into two meals—because they are prone to bloat, they are at risk of stomach torsion if they gulp their food or eat too much at once.
It is common for greyhounds to gain 5 pounds after they retire from racing, but you should monitor your pet's weight to ensure they don't gain more than that. If your dog is putting on too much weight, discuss the proper diet with your veterinarian and get recommendations for feeding schedules, amounts, types of dog food, and exercise.
Where to Adopt or Buy a Greyhound
If you go through a breeder, expect to pay between $1,500 to $2,500 for a purebred greyhound puppy.
Though greyhounds can sometimes be obtained from a breeder as puppies, the majority of available dogs are retired racers. Adopting a retired racer is a wonderful thing to do.
If you would like to share your life with this unique dog breed, take the time to do your research first. Talk to your veterinarian, other greyhound pet parents, greyhound rescue groups, and reputable breeders to learn more.
The most likely place to adopt a greyhound is from a breed-specific rescue group. Luckily, there are many resources where you can find a retired greyhound, such as:
Greyhound Welfare, Inc.
Greyhound Pets of America
National Greyhound Adoption Program
The National Greyhound Association also offers a list of endorsed regional greyhound rescue groups on its website.

Greyhound CharacteristicsEnergy:+ High-energy dogs will need a lot of mental and physical stimulation to stay happy and healthy, while low-energy dogs require minimal physical activity. It’s important when choosing a dog to make sure their energy levels match your lifestyle or vice versa. Trainability:+ Easy-to-train dogs are more skilled at learning prompts and actions quickly with minimal training. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Health:+ Some dog breeds are prone to certain genetic health problems, and some more than others. This doesn’t mean that every dog will have these issues, but they have an increased risk, so it’s important to understand and prepare for any additional needs they may require. Lifespan:+ Some breeds, due to their size or their breeds potential genetic health issues, have shorter lifespans than others. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. Sociability:+ Some dog breeds are more social than others, both towards humans and other dogs. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. No matter the breed, it’s important to socialize your dog and expose them to lots of different situations.

Greyhound puppies can be hard to find. Because Greyhound racing is such a big business, most breeders are looking to produce racing dogs rather than pets.
Many organizations are dedicated to rescuing and re-homing retired racing Greyhounds. If you are willing to adopt an adult Greyhound rather than purchase a puppy, youʻre likely to find many in need of good homes.
If you want an affectionate and adaptable dog, the Greyhound may be for you. They will as happy to lounging on a couch as they would be sprinting after a ball.
Temperament & Intelligence of the Greyhound
Mellow and sensitive, yet independent, Greyhounds are a unique mix of temperament traits. Though they are intelligent dogs, theyʻre bred to work and hunt with minimal direction from humans. This independent nature can make them a challenge to train. Greyhounds are fun-loving and quite entertaining to live.
Are These Dogs Good for Families?
Overall, Greyhounds make good pets for families. They are tolerant and gentle by nature, sturdy enough to handle playing with rowdy kids. However, any dog should be supervised around children, especially if you donʻt know whether they were properly socialized to kids early in life. Greyhounds can be suspicious and aloof towards strangers but loving towards all members of their family.
Greyhounds are also highly adaptable dogs, making them a good choice for busy families with unpredictable daily lives. They donʻt need a rigid daily routine like some other, higher-strung breeds. Most adult Greyhounds, especially retired racers, are used to spending time alone so they often tolerate time on their own better than some other breeds.
Does This Breed Get Along with Other Pets?
Originally, Greyhounds were bred to hunt in packs and this heritage means the breed generally gets along well with other dogs, especially dogs of similar size. Small dogs might be viewed as prey so take extra caution introducing them to a Greyhound.
Racing Greyhounds are used to spending a lot of time with other dogs and usually fit in well to multi-dog households in retirement. As always, be sure to take your time and supervise new fur friends carefully as they get to know each other.
Due to their strong prey drive, Greyhounds arenʻt always the best choice of a housemate for cats or small pocket pets. Dog-savvy cats, who donʻt behave like prey, may be able to live safely with a Greyhound. However, youʻll need to take extra time to socialize the cat and Greyhound with each other and carefully monitor their interactions.
To avoid stressing out small exotic pets, itʻs best to keep them separated from a Greyhound should you chose to have such a mixed pet household. Even if your Greyhound completely ignores them, many exotic animals are stressed by even the sight of a predator like a dog.

Things to Know When Owning a Greyhound:
Think you might have room in your home and heart for a fast running, hard snoozing Greyhound? Hereʻs what you need to know before taking the big leap into Greyhound parenting!
Food & Diet Requirements
To keep a Greyhound healthy and fit, feed a nutritionally balanced, quality diet. Depending on how active your Greyhound is, they may require a higher protein food to keep up with their energy needs. Your veterinarian can help you choose the right diet and calculate the proper amount to feed to keep your Greyhound at a good weight. Itʻs especially important to involve your veterinarian if you decide to feed a homemade diet to make certain you include all the vitamins and minerals your Greyhound needs to thrive.
Exercise
Greyhounds are sometimes called the “worldʻs fastest couch potatoes,” because although theyʻre one of the speediest animals alive, they donʻt have as much energy as you might assume. Like all dogs, they should get daily exercise, such as a brisk walk or chasing a ball. However, you wonʻt need to devote a good chunk of your day to tiring out your Greyhound. About an hour a day of exercise should do the trick and then itʻs probably right back to the couch for them!
If you can do so safely, your Greyhound would love the chance to have a full-speed run now and then. Keep in mind you should never let a Greyhound off-leash except in an enclosed area. If you do, you may find yourself left in the dust while your dog takes off (at 45 mph!) in pursuit of an unlucky rabbit or squirrel.
Training
Because they were developed to hunt fast and without much direction from humans, Greyhounds can be challenging to train. Theyʻre used to making their own decisions and require patient, gentle guidance as they learn. Short, positive training sessions will be most successful.
Greyhounds are sensitive dogs who wonʻt respond well to rough training methods. Reward-based training focused on working with your Greyhound rather than making them work for you, should bring the best results.
Reportedly, some Greyhounds can be hard to housetrain. However, this could be because so many Greyhounds are adopted as adults and often come straight from life in a racing kennel. Housetraining an adult dog is always a bit more challenging than a puppy, especially one not used to living in a house!
Grooming ✂️
Despite their short coats, Greyhounds are not considered a hypoallergenic breed. They shed regularly but not excessively. Weekly brushing with a hound glove or rubber curry brush can help keep the shedding under control and the coat healthy. Regular nail trimming is also a must. Bathe your Greyhound as needed, keep their ears clean, and brush their teeth daily if possible.

Health and Conditions
Greyhounds are one of the healthier dog breeds when it comes to inherited conditions. Responsible breeders will make sure to only breed dogs who are free of any known genetic conditions. If you adopt an adult Greyhound, you might not be able to find out much about their history, so itʻs important to be aware of possible health problems to look out for.
Minor Conditions
Progressive Retinal Atrophy
Serious Conditions
Bloat
Greyhound neuropathy
Osteosarcoma
Serious Conditions:
Like all large, deep-chested breeds, Greyhounds are at risk of bloat, a life-threatening medical emergency.
A neurological condition called Greyhound neuropathy also occurs in the breed.
Greyhounds commonly get a bone cancer called osteosarcoma.
Minor Conditions:
Greyhounds are prone to an eye condition called Progressive Retinal Atrophy.
Itʻs recommended that breeding Greyhounds are tested for the gene causing Greyhound neuropathy. They should undergo heart and eye screenings as well to ensure they are as healthy as possible.
Male vs Female
When choosing between a male or female Greyhound, you wonʻt find many differences to impact your decision. Males are usually larger, as with most dog breeds.
Some Greyhound owners report that females can be a bit more standoffish than males, but every dog is an individual and this wonʻt always be the case.
Male dogs are more likely to mark than females but neutering usually helps nip this bad habit. With female Greyhounds, you’ll need to plan on dealing with a messy heat cycle twice a year or getting the dog spayed.
3 Little-Known Facts About the Greyhound
1. They are the fastest breed of dog.
At full sprint, a Greyhound can run as fast as 40 – 45 mph. They run so fast, in fact, that their feet only touch the ground 25% of the time at top speed!
2. They are one of the oldest breeds of dogs.
The earliest ancestors of Greyhounds date back 5,000 years, to the deserts of ancient Egypt. They served as hunting companions to the pharaohs, and later as status symbols for other ancient nobles.
3. They have eyes in the back of their head.
Well not literally, but because of the shape of their head and eye placement, Greyhounds can actually see whatʻs behind them. They can also see as far as a 1/2 mile into the distance. Rabbits and other prey donʻt stand a chance against a Greyhound!

Final Thoughts
Whether racing after a ball or lounging upside down with their feet in the air, Greyhounds are determined to live life at their own pace. One of the few purebred dogs that are almost always acquired as adults, Greyhounds present a unique opportunity for pet lovers. Take the time to learn as much as you can about the Greyhound or any breed you’re considering for purchase or adoption. Owning a pet requires plenty of love but also the responsibility of a lifetime commitment to your new family member.

This was a key method of how Allied naval forces detected and tracked German U-Boats: the Kriegsmarine's U-boat fleet maintained a high amount of radio traffic with its shore command and with each other for their Wolfpack tactics against Allied shipping. Huff-Duff allowed Allied naval ships to detect those radio transmissions and determine the location of those transmitting ships to attack them.GoofsOne of the German U-boat commanders taunts Greyhound over the radio. This would never have happened in reality. Each Navy ship had a radio signal direction finder and if a U-Boat broke radio silence, triangulation would reveal its exact position.QuotesGray Wolf: [on radio] Greyhound, good luck surviving the night.Crazy creditsDuring the first part of the end credits, some black and white WW2 era clips are shown.ConnectionsFeatured in Half in the Bag: Blumhouse's Dirty Secret (2020)SoundtracksIt Came Upon A Midnight ClearPublic DomainArranged by Bill CunliffePerformed by Bill CunliffeCourtesy of Black Toast MusicUser reviews946ReviewReviewFeatured review7/10 Worthy WW 2 Navy Saga - GreyhoundTom Hanks is like a fine wine; he gets better with age. He was very entertaining when he started out several years ago, and now he is as good as any actor in Hollywood. And now, he is also an accomplished screenwriter. He did a great job with this one, and I look forward to his next work. Greyhound is about a convoy vs a wolfpack of German subs. Simple story; complex features. The cinematography and pacing is first-rate. Thankfully, the film is not bogged down by romantic devices often found in WW2 films; it is strictly meat and potatoes warfare. Don't miss this one, and don't forget the sacrifices that generation made for us.helpful•333arthur_taferoMay 19, 2022Top picksSign in to rate and Watchlist for personalized recommendationsSign inFAQ28How long is Greyhound?Powered by AlexaWhat's the reason Captain Krause keeps misspelling his crewmen names? It's left out of the edit. In the novel is he portrayed as dyslexic? Why do some sailors have massive helmets? In the beginning of the movie, we see the escort plane and the ships communicating by light signals, not to break radio silence. Later on, we hear the captain talking to the other destroyers, while they are miles away. It seemed they had broken radio silence, since the subs had seen them anyway. But then, they regret having to break radio silence by calling on the admiralty. So how did they communicate? Or is it an inaccuracy?DetailsEditRelease dateJuly 10, 2020 (Philippines)Countries of originUnited StatesCanadaChinaOfficial sitesOfficial FacebookOfficial SiteLanguageEnglishAlso known asChiến Hạm Thủ LĩnhFilming locationsBaton Rouge, Louisiana, USAProduction companiesApple Original FilmsSony Pictures ReleasingStage 6 FilmsSee more company credits at IMDbProBox officeEditBudget$50,300,000 (estimated)See detailed box office info on IMDbProTechnical specsEditRuntime1 hour 31 minutesColorColorSound mixDolby Surround 7.1StereoAspect ratio2.39 : 1Related newsContribute to this pageSuggest an edit or add missing contentIMDb Answers: Help fill gaps in our dataLearn more about contributingEdit pageMore to exploreListStaff Picks: What to Watch in MarchSee the listListIMDb Staff's 2024 Oscar PredictionsSee our predictionsListHillary's 6 Picks for March and BeyondSee the full listRecently viewedYou have no recently viewed pagesGet the IMDb AppSign in for more accessSign in for more accessGet the IMDb AppHelpSite IndexIMDbProBox Office MojoIMDb DeveloperPress RoomAdvertisingJobsConditions of UsePrivacy PolicyYour Ads Privacy ChoicesIMDb, an Amazon company© 1990-2024 by IMDb.com, Inc.Back to top
