Showrunner Ellen Rapoport keeps “Minx” oddly breezy, rah-rah and incredibly safe. That is enough to keep viewers entertained.... But the subtext is white fantasy and innovation.

I loved that this was written in a realistic way, and eventually - for me it took a bit too long - but I liked that Joyce was challenged on her lack of dimension in her feminism.

My frustration was growing because at the end of the day, if you want to be a good person, if you want to be for women if you want to be for other people, just be for other people. It doesn't need to be layered and nuanced.

Bad writing and in the wake of the me too movement; it's shocking that these pathetic shows still exist that are nothing more than extreme sexual exploitation for shock value. Don't waste your time on this; there are plenty of exceptional shows out there.

Minx is great fun, and quite the entertaining experience! A nice blend of comedy and serious social commentary that is still relevant in many aspects even for today's society. It appears many reviewers here may have been offended at these observations of those times, but I suggest you decide for yourselves instead of trusting review bombers. I'm with the critics on this one.

A smart, satirical, adult comedy played against a backdrop of1970s morals and values that are clearly out-dated today, but is great material for laughs. Unfortunately some of the other amateur reviewers here cannot tell the difference between comedy and ideology, but ignore those nay-sayers and give this show a whirl.

Minx season 1: how to watch, episodes and everything we know about the comedy
By Terrell Smith published 12 January 2023
Minx is a comedy that "strips down" definitions of 1970s feminism.
(Image credit: Katrina Marcinowski / HBO Max)
Minx season 1 is sure to cause a stir when it begins airing on HBO Max, as it showcases its version of 1970s feminism through the eyes of a woman who reluctantly runs an erotic magazine for other women. As provocative as the concept may seem, would-be viewers should wait for Minx’s debut with eager anticipation knowing that Paul Feig has signed on as an executive producer of the series. Feig has directed films such as The Heat, Spy and perhaps most notably, Bridesmaids starring Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph. Given his experience working on successful women-led comedies, there are expectations that this new show will also be well-received by audiences. Here’s everything we know about Minx season 1. Will there be a Minx season 2?Minx lives! After first being renewed and getting production on Minx season 2 started before then being cancelled (and ultimately removed from the streaming service) by HBO Max, the 1970s set comedy has been saved by Starz. The Hollywood Reporter was one of the first outlets to share the news, also adding that both Minx season 1 and future episodes of Minx are going to be available to watch via Starz. How to watch Minx season 1So as of right now, you can't watch Minx, as the show was removed from HBO Max, it's original streaming service. Minx is an HBO Max Original comedy that follows the struggles of a woman who wants to use her ambition and talent as a writer to change the publishing industry of the 1970s. Specifically, she wants to elevate how the industry represents women. Unfortunately for her, her original pitch on how to enact that change doesn’t resonate with the gatekeepers of publishing. That’s when she opts into a partnership creating the first erotic magazine for women. HBO Max describes the plot by saying: "In the 1970s, Joyce (Ophelia Lovibond) is a young feminist from Los Angeles who creates an unlikely bond with editor Doug (Jake Johnson) as they set out to create the first women's erotic magazine."Jake Johnson, Ophelia Lovibond and Stephen Tobolowsky in Minx (Image credit: Katrina Marcinowski / HBO Max)Minx season 1 cast Leading the cast of Minx season 1 is Ophelia Lovibond. While the name may not ring a bell for some, fans of Guardians of the Galaxy will remember Lovibond played the character Carina. Another standout of the main cast is Jake Johnson. Television watchers will remember Johnson from the hit series New Girl, where he played bartender turned author Nick Miller. While Johnson initially signed onto Minx as a guess star, during the course of production, he was bumped up to be a main part of the cast. Filling out the rest of the show’s regulars are: Ophelia Lovibond as JoyceJake Johnson as DougIdara Victor as TinaJessica Lowe as BambiLennon Parham as ShellyMichael Angarano as GlennOscar Montoya as RichieSome other familiar names who will appear in Minx (as recurring or one-time guest stars we're not sure yet) include Gillian Jacobs, Hope Davis, Stephen Tobolowsky and Amy Landecker.Minx season 1 trailer HBO Max has provided a first look at their racy new comedy Minx. It looks as if the series won’t be light on laughs or skin.

Where Will Minx Season 2 Be Available to Stream?
Image via Starz
As previously mentioned, Minx Season 2 will be a Starz original series, meaning that new episodes will only be available to stream through their streaming service. The series was originally an HBO Max original but was pulled from the service due to a new strategy.
Is There a Trailer for Minx Season 2?
In the trailer for Season 2 of Minx, viewers get to witness the triumphant comeback of the beloved Minx staff. As Doug himself puts it, Minx is now "back and better than ever!" This clever phrase serves as a playful reference not only to the characters within the show but also as a subtle dig at the surprising cancellation of Minx on HBO Max.
A red-band trailer was released on July 14, 2023, featuring plenty of cocaine use, pixilated nudity, and sex, that fans of the series have come to expect, all set to the song T. Rex's classic song "Bang a Gong (Get It On)."
In Season 2 of Minx, the magazine's sales skyrocket, propelling them to newfound heights of success. It's a complete departure from their humble beginnings in the first season. The crew is seen reaping the fruits of their labor and savoring every inch of the glamorous lifestyle - walking on red carpets, traveling in jets, and attending the hottest parties. As bigger dreams and risks lay in front of them, there's no stopping Minx from taking their magazine global.
Who Stars in Minx Season 2?
Image via Starz
Lovibond takes on the role of Joyce Prigger, who once aspired to publish her own magazine and finally sees her dreams come true as Minx becomes a commercial triumph. However, as her fame and influence grow, Joyce begins to lose sight of her fundamental values, struggling to find harmony between her ambition and her integrity.
Meanwhile, Johnson portrays Doug Renetti, who recently sold Bottom Dollar and acquired immense wealth beyond his wildest dreams. Driven by a desire to prove his ability to replicate his prior success, Doug finds himself feeling like an outsider when the new owner of Bottom Dollar appears to favor Joyce and Tina over him. Fears of being sidelined from the company he built start to gnaw at Doug, leaving him uncertain of his place in the organization.
Idara Victor takes on the role of Tina in the show, who makes the bold decision to forgo business school and instead becomes the managing editor of Minx. This risky choice proves to be fruitful when the new owner of Bottom Dollar recognizes Tina's exceptional business acumen. Jessica Lowe portrays Bambi, a character who transitions away from her previous profession as a nude model in search of meaning and finds her true purpose at Bottom Dollar.
Oscar Montoya portrays Richie, the art director of Minx, who eagerly anticipates the opportunity to expand the magazine and embrace fresh artistic endeavors. Lennon Parham takes on the role of Shelly, who, after her romantic involvement with Bambi in the first season, strives to regain a sense of normalcy. Shelly focuses on reinvesting in her relationship with her husband, Lenny, as she seeks stability and harmony in her personal life.
In Season 2, Elizabeth Perkins (Weeds) joins the cast as Constance Papadopolous. Constance is a quirky and unconventional former shipping magnate who emerges from early retirement to acquire Bottom Dollar. Endowed with limitless wealth and influence, she sets her ambitious goals on expanding the Minx brand and leading the company towards global expansion.
What Is Minx Season 2 About?
Image via Starz
Below is the official synopsis for Minx Season 2:
“After Doug and Joyce sell Bottom Dollar to a retired shipping magnate with unlimited money and power, Minx becomes a commercial success, bringing more money, more fame and more temptations. Under new leadership, Doug struggles to find his footing and maintain his control within Bottom Dollar. Meanwhile, Joyce begins to lose sight of her core beliefs as she gets caught up in her rise to stardom. As our Bottom Dollar misfits go mainstream, they start to question who they’re becoming and what they really want from this newfound success.”
The world of Minx is set in uber-stylish 1970s Los Angeles. Following an unlikely professional partnership of random sorts, headstrong feminist Joyce Prigger (Lovibond) teams up with determined pornography publisher Doug Renetti (Johnson) as they unleash Minx, the first erotic magazine that caters to a female audience. Despite the glitz and glam of ‘70s L.A., the idea of establishing an erotic publication doesn’t please everyone, especially since it’s not meant for male consumption. From snooty local politicians crazy about censorship, and petty naysayers, to even a couple of guys from the mafia, nothing is standing in Joyce and Doug’s way.
Throughout their journey, the duo receives unwavering from a dedicated team, which includes Bambi (Lowe), a former nude model who utilizes her sex-positive knowledge to advance Minx's business strategy. Tina (Victor) serves as Doug's assistant and trusted ally, while Richie (Montoya) is the skilled photographer responsible for capturing images for the magazine's most talked-about centerfolds.

Who Is Making Minx?
Image via Starz
Ellen Rapoport serves as the creator, executive producer, showrunner, and director of Minx. The show has been celebrated for championing feminist ideals in the ‘70s era and redefined the idea of female desire in a world where women are expected to only please men and not themselves. On top of that, the show gained immediate success thanks to its witty writing and stunning visuals. Rapport’s previous projects include co-writing the screenplay for Clifford The Big Red Dog as well as Desperados.
Another familiar name in the show production scene is none other than Paul Feig, who serves as executive producer of Minx. Known for his impressive portfolio of female-led movies, he’s the man behind Bridesmaids, Spy, and A Simple Favor. Feig is set to direct and produce a sequel to the latter.
The production team of Minx further includes Dan Magnante and Ben Karlin as executive producers, Jake Johnson as co-executive producer, Blake McClure as the director of photography, Marie Schley as the costume designer, and Carleigh Herbet as the head makeup artist.

Minx Returns with an Entertaining Second Season at New Home

When it first premiered on HBO in the spring of 2022, “Minx”—a comedy set in 1970s Los Angeles about the struggles of a young feminist woman fighting to print the intellectual magazine she thinks women deserve—won rave reviews and a renewal. Production was nearly complete on the sophomore season when David Zaslav, the new CEO of Warner Brothers Discovery (and all-around penny-wise, pound-foolish champion), not only revoked the Season Two pickup; he had the series removed from HBO’s catalog altogether. Fortunately, Starz stepped in and saved the show. Even with the change of address, “Minx” remains the fun, thought-provoking laugh riot audiences came to love last year.

Season Two is all about flipping the story on its head. What happens to art and artists when you find fame and success? Minx founder Joyce Prigger (Ophelia Lovibond) used to battle with pornography publisher Doug Renetti (Jake Johnson) over control of her smash-hit magazine. He capitulated in the final scenes of Season One, asking her to take him along for the ride; now, Joyce finds herself feted by the likes of Hearst, Conde Nast, and Meredith while Doug watches from the sidelines, wringing his hands and desperate to find a way to prove his usefulness. Tina (Idara Victor), his girlfriend and the magazine’s managing director, no longer wishes to suppress her ambition and is eager to climb the corporate ladder. Joyce’s sister Shelly (Lennon Parham), after sleeping with Minx employee Bambi (Jessica Lowe), is struggling to understand her newly changing sexuality while also maintaining equanimity at home with dentist husband Lenny (Rich Sommer). For her part, Bambi gracefully allows Shelly to back away but feels adrift, wondering whether she offers any value to her workplace or colleagues. Richie (Oscar Montoya), Minx’s art director, found his voice by the end of Season One, reveling in his desire and ability to speak up for himself and his vision. But when Constance Papadopoulos (Elizabeth Perkins), a vulture capitalist in sheep’s clothing, expresses interest in funding the magazine, Joyce is starry-eyed to receive help from “the first woman to have a seat on the New York Stock Exchange” but neglects to notice that Constance’s vision of a queer-exclusionary feminist women’s magazine will affect Richie and readers like him. One of the most striking things about Season One was its progressivism. “Minx” was the first show of its caliber and scale to discuss workers’ rights, sex-positivity, and inclusion regularly. That’s no less prevalent now; this season, the writers have placed greater emphasis on intersectionality. Richie pointedly reminds Joyce that she probably hears “no” less than he, a queer Latino man, does. Bambi resents that because she is a former object of fantasy—i.e., an ex-print pornography model—everyone has projected onto her their fantasies of a helpful, easygoing colleague. She longs to feel a familial bond with her coworkers, but Richie wisely advises she separate work and life, that while it’s fine to be friendly with your workmates, it’s best not to think of them as family. Caught up in her newfound fame, Joyce has ignored the efforts Shelly has made in the past and present to help her younger sister. This meld of class consciousness and inclusiveness allows the actors in these roles to shine. If Season Two belongs to anyone, it’s to everyone who isn’t Joyce or Doug. Yes, Lovibond and Johnson are doing terrific work here. The latter especially brings a pitiable and wholly understandable anguish to the role, imbuing Doug with a relentless need to be understood, loved, and prized. But the world belongs less and less to him. Instead, it belongs to people like Tina. Like much of the series cast, Idara Victor is a “Mad Men” alum, having played Dawn Chambers’ best friend during Season Six. Her performance on “Minx” is beautifully multidimensional. There is careful thought in how Tina, a Black woman, can safely project power without being shown the door. She draws up her spine straight, refusing to be guilt-tripped into running her family’s stationery store, but willing to compromise in corporate spaces so she can have a seat at the table.

The world belongs to people like Richie, refusing to sacrifice art and humanity to capital, strident about his need for an artistic outlet, cognizant that his vision has many uses and must be protected. Montoya does a lovely job with these internal battles, letting emotion and drive hang on Richie’s face until he’s made his point. Lennon Parham (also a “Mad Men” alum, a pushy realtor from Season Six) is also doing the best work of her career, standing up for herself, her needs, her desires, and her right to be a person unto herself. With almost imperceptible glances, head tilts, and blinks, Parham establishes a bedrock of strength for Shelly. She is vulnerable, but she is discovering who she wants to be. It helps that Parham is aided by the keen comic timing and hopeful eyes of Sommer, who loves his wife but understands she has changed and wants to aid her journey of self-discovery. This writer has two moderate quibbles with this season. For a character who spoke so forthrightly about human rights and the need to protect art from money-hungry capitalists, it’s difficult to believe Joyce wouldn’t have seen through Constance’s charade. Second, the timing of the back half of the series feels off. There are only eight episodes, and they’re 30 minutes each. Perhaps the transfer of “Minx” from HBO to Starz interfered in some way with mapping out various storylines and pacing, but the glitches aren’t significant enough to greatly impact the quality of Season Two. Viewers can only hope that Starz will be wiser than HBO when keeping a period piece of this excellence. Whole season was screened for review. Season Two of "Minx" premieres on July 21st.

When editor Joyce (Ophelia Lovibond) attends a meeting to plan the nude male centerfold for the first issue of Minx, the feminist porn magazine she’s about to launch, she wonders aloud about the wisdom of having a nude male centerfold at all: “Are erections consistent with our philosophy?”
Her publisher, Doug (Jake Johnson), counters with a different question. “I think you’re missing the point of a centerfold,” he says. “The only question that matters is, does it turn you on?
Minx
The Bottom Line
Smart, breezy fun.
Airdate: Thursday, March 17 (HBO Max)
Cast: Ophelia Lovibond, Jake Johnson, Jessica Lowe, Idara Victor, Oscar Montoya, Lennon Parham, Michael Angarano
Creator: Ellen Rapoport
Minx, the show, unfolds in the gap between those questions — between lofty ideas and base desires, between firmly held values and sometimes inconvenient lived realities. On paper, that might sound as stuffy as, well, a debate over whether erections can be feminist. But in practice, the HBO Max comedy strikes that balance more confidently than any of its characters manage to, serving up a breezy romp that also manages to be shrewd in the ways it interrogates sex.

'Minx' Canceled at Starz
Set in the early 1970s — for those who like to place historical eras in their proper pop cultural context, that’s roughly the same period as the beginnings of Mrs. America and The Deuce, or right after the end of Mad Men — the series follows Joyce, a preppy Vassar alum, as she sets out to launch the women’s magazine she’s been dreaming of since her teen years. Ideally, it’d be called The Matriarchy Awakens and be filled with dense, heady essays about feminist theory. But when the only publisher who expresses any interest turns out to be Doug, whose Bottom Dollar prints porn mags for straight men, he and Joyce reshape her vision into Minx — the first erotic magazine aimed at women, mixing full-frontal nudity with forward-thinking articles.
Minx‘s narrative juice may come from the differences between Joyce and Doug, but creator Ellen Rapoport wisely writes them as full, flawed characters rather than stereotypes or talking points. Joyce is a politically progressive liberal, and also a bit of a sheltered prude; she might try to avoid being overly judgmental, but Lovibond expresses her reflexive discomfort with her more sexually liberated coworkers through her fidgety body language. Doug is neither a total sleaze nor a total saint, but a business-savvy charmer who has his own reasons for betting on Joyce. Slick and ambitious, he has little in common with the hangdog slackers Johnson’s perfected in roles like New Girl — but retains just enough of that affability to make Doug hard not to fall for.
The sparks that fly between Lovibond and Johnson are unmistakable, but they’re of a platonic, professional sort. After a rocky start defined by Joyce’s skepticism of her new colleagues, the magazine’s core team starts to gel over the first five half-hour episodes sent to critics (of a ten-episode season). The standouts among the bunch are Jessica Rowe as porn model Bambi, who doesn’t so much buck blond-bimbo stereotypes as embrace and extol them; and a very entertaining Lennon Parham as Joyce’s homemaker sister Shelly, who turns out to be better than Joyce in some ways at navigating between the country club and the porn studio.
It’s a mark of Minx‘s big aspirations that its episodes frequently look beyond the walls of the Bottom Dollar offices, delving into the industry’s knotty relationships with local mobsters and politicians or its distance from the “classier” business world exemplified by the upper-middle-class circles that Joyce and Shelly were raised in. But in contrast to the show’s nuanced explorations of Joyce’s journey of sexual awakening or Doug’s yearning for professional legitimacy, these explorations of more established institutions tend to fall back on obvious villains like a predatory businessman (Stephen Tobolowsky) or a repressive councilwoman (Amy Landecker).
Likewise, as carefully as the series handles Joyce’s white, wealthy, heterosexual female perspective — including calling her out on her entitlement or obliviousness as warranted — it so far has far less to say about nonwhite or queer ones, despite the inclusion of characters like Richie (Oscar Montoya), the gay Latino photographer who gives the magazine its approachable visual style; or Tina (Idara Victor), the Black executive assistant who keeps Bottom Dollar up and running.
For that matter, as daring as Joyce and Doug’s ideas might seem within the confines of the show, few of them seem designed to seriously challenge an audience half a century removed from their gains. Even Joyce’s fifth-episode epiphany about the way women in more traditional gender roles wield their power by manipulating their husbands is territory already covered by the likes of Game of Thrones.
Still, Minx‘s limitations are easy enough to forgive when it’s such a joy to watch. Besides the flawless cast chemistry and snappy writing, it offers a feast for the eyes — appropriately, for a series set in an industry built on the pleasures of looking. The sets and costumes tell a story about the clashing ideologies at the show’s center: Joyce’s prim pussy bows could not feel more distinct from Doug’s loose, louche button-downs, and the clean hard lines of a traditional teen girl magazine’s offices are a world away the casual disarray of Bottom Dollar’s. They’re also just fun to drink in, with all their bright colors and rich textures, and I’d suspect more than a few people will come away from Minx with a burning desire to scour Etsy for vintage finds.
And then, of course, there are the dongs. Joyce may start the series assuming that penises look “all basically the same” — probably because, as she admits, she’s only ever seen two and a half of them in her life. But Minx knows better. The centerpiece of the first episode is a montage of dicks, proudly displayed for the staff’s discerning eyes as part of a centerfold casting session. Contrary to Joyce’s fears about exposed members seeming exploited or threatening, director Rachel Lee Goldenberg shoots them to celebrate their diversity and the distinctive personalities of the men they’re attached to — as expressed with a cock of the hip, a coy tug of the waistband or a jaunty jazz-hands flourish. Ensuing episodes spend less time ogling private parts, male or female, but the scene feels like a mission statement for the entire show’s frank, playful approach to sexuality.
If Minx does not fully live up to its potential in the first five episodes, what it does accomplish is bursting with enough heart and humor to make even its shortcomings feel more like a testament to its ambitions than a mark of its failures. After all, as Joyce and her staff should know better than anyone, any venture new enough to be exciting also tends to come with a steep learning curve. By the midpoint of the season, Minx, the magazine, has overcome public skepticism, pretentious writing and a police raid to step toward a future that looks brighter than ever. If anything, Minx the show finds itself in an even more enviable position: It’s a very good new series that has the potential to become even better, hopefully in many more seasons to come.
